The Canon Foundation in Europe offers grants for individuals to carry out research in Europe or Japan. Europeans (including the Balkan and Baltic countries, Israel, Switzerland, Turkey and UK) are expected to carry out their research in JAPAN whilst Japanese are expected to carry out their research in EUROPE.
We support applications in all research fields.
Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree within the 10 years preceding their application and must hold the degree at the time of submission. Extensions to this 10 year rule will be considered for justified causes (for example maternity/paternity leave, medical exemptions, military service etc.)
Applicants are free to choose their host institution in Japan or Europe and do not need to be enrolled or employed at the time of applying.
Preference is given to applicants planning to travel to Japan or Europe rather than those seeking to extend their current stays.
A successful applicant can expect to receive up to 30,000 Euros per year pro rata.
The minimum period is 3 months to maximum 12 months.
The start date of the research can be any date from 1 January up to 1 December 2026 and the Fellowship can continue into 2027.
Grants are established at the discretion of the Foundation and based upon the nature of the research project. Because the form has been designed for applicants from the commercial, governmental and academic worlds, parts of the form may be more or less relevant.
Candidates should be aware that it is our policy NOT to award Fellowships to people who are already in possession of a concurrent research grant aid from another Foundation authority.
As part of the application procedure, you will be asked to upload the following documents:-
1. Your research plan which should include an estimate of the total costs. The maximum length of the research plan should not exceed 2 sides of 1 A4 sheet.
2. Your Curriculum Vitae
3. Your highest academic degree obtained to date
4. 1 passport size photograph of yourself
5. A list of your academic publications or professional achievements in chronological order containing information on all authors, place and year of publication and page references
6. Two reference letters from two persons who are in a position to comment on your academic or professional qualifications and on your previous work.
7. A confirmation letter from your host institute that research and/or work facilities will be made available to you. The confirmation letter should state that research or work facilities will be made available to you. It should also include how the supervisor/host institution will help you to facilitate the project (i.e., what resources will be offered, what kind of supervision will be given, etc.). This will help the Selection Committee establish the feasibility of the project.
In order for your application to be accepted, you must complete the application form and upload the above documents in bold at least and submit it by 15 September midnight (CET).
If the reference letters and/or host confirmation letter have not arrived by the deadline, please submit your application anyway by 15 September. You have until 30 September to log back into your application and upload the letters. Once uploaded, please remember to resubmit your application.
On 30 September midnight (CET), the uploading function will be closed.
The referees and host supervisors can also email the reference letters and host confirmation directly to us at foundation@canon-europe.com and then we will match the documents to your application and upload them after 30 September when the portal has been closed.
Your application will be considered complete on receipt of the two reference letters and the host confirmation letter.
For any questions regarding the application form process, please email Suzy Cohen at foundation@canon-europe.com
